What damage is caused by xylophagous insects?

The xylophages are insects that feed on the cellulose present in wood. Their capacity to deteriorate structures and objects is high, especially because most of the damage occurs inside the wood, becoming visible only when it is too late.

Subterranean termites, for example, are capable of consuming large quantities of wood from the bottom up, leaving no obvious external signs. For their part, the different species of woodworm go through complete life cycles within the material, slowly weakening each affected piece.

Most common types of woodworm

Among the wood-eating insects we treat most frequently, there are three main types of woodworm:

Common woodworm (family Anobidae): very common in antique furniture. The female deposits eggs in small cracks in the wood, where the larvae feed until they emerge as adults, leaving round holes (1 to 3 mm) and a characteristic fine dust.
Large woodworm (Cerambycid family): can reach considerable sizes (up to 75 mm). Their damage is more aggressive and their oval holes reach 10 mm. They often attack beams and structural elements.
Parquet woodworm: it is installed especially in wooden floors with humidity equal to or higher than 6%. Its holes are smaller (up to 1.6 mm), but its action is silent and persistent.

Early detection is complicated, since the most obvious signs, such as dust or holes, appear only when the adults emerge to reproduce. It is therefore essential to act at the slightest sign.
